Overview

We are seeking an experienced finance professional to act as a Finance Manager / Project Controller within the construction sector in Virginia, USA. The role will lead financial planning, reporting and control across a portfolio of projects, partnering with operational teams to improve performance, manage risk and strengthen governance from tender through to close-out.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own project financial control: budgets, forecasts, cost-to-complete, cash flow and monthly close.
  • Prepare timely management accounts, board-level packs and project performance dashboards (earned value, margin, variances).
  • Oversee WIP accounting, revenue recognition, change control and claims support in line with contract terms.
  • Manage project cost reporting, including labour, plant, subcontractors, materials and overhead allocations.
  • Lead cost and risk reviews with project managers; challenge assumptions and drive corrective actions.
  • Support tendering with financial models, pricing input, assumptions, and post-bid handover controls.
  • Administer payment applications, client invoicing, retention, and supplier/subcontractor valuation processes.
  • Strengthen internal controls, audit readiness, and compliance with policies and relevant standards.
  • Line-manage and mentor finance staff where required; coordinate with external accountants and auditors.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in project controls/finance management within construction, engineering, or related project-based environments.
  • Strong knowledge of project accounting, WIP, revenue recognition, cost-to-complete and cash management.
  • Experience with contract types such as lump sum, GMP and cost-plus; understanding of change orders and claims.
  • Advanced Excel skills; familiarity with ERP/project systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, COINS, Vista, Procore, or similar).
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, able to influence operational teams and communicate clearly to non-finance colleagues.
  • High attention to detail, strong analytical capability and a proactive, solutions-focused approach.
  • Degree in Finance, Accounting, Quantity Surveying, or a related discipline; professional qualification (ACA/ACCA/CIMA or equivalent) preferred.
